Storm Chase Live Notes
(5122009-18:22UTC) Chris Rice: Mesoscale Discussion 801 - Large hail threat for E, KS and W, MO and SW, IA.
(5132009-14:06UTC) Chris Rice: Corey, Steve will be heading to Columbia, MO. Everyone should be up streaming this afternoon. I will be heading out shortly.
(5132009-04:16UTC) Chris Rice: Tornado near Kirksville, MO has reported fatality, and injuries, news story here. We made it to the tornado wanred cell to the SW of Kirksville, that produced a wall cloud and some pea size hail. I never quite made it all the way to Kirksville due to the limited road networks.
(652009-14:07UTC) Chris Rice: Current chase target for today looks to be in the vicinity of Julesberg, CO area. Will take another look around noon.
(672009-13:19UTC) Chris Rice: Current chase target for today looks to be NE, KS, I'm hoping for somewhere off 36 Hwy from Marysville to Hiawatha, KS - I love that area - Will be streaming today from 4-8pm.
(692009-14:34UTC) Chris Rice: heading out I-35 from Olathe to Emporia monitoring METARS all the way - and will be focusing on TP - GL all!
(6102009-14:34UTC) Chris Rice: Looks like I will be heading right back to the same area again today in SE, KS - no complaints!
(6102009-03:20UTC) Chris Rice: Well my target area was right, but I messed around and was late getting there and ended up on the wrong side of the storm. I punched the core but everything congealed together and became a mess, I did catch the remnant lowering. Sounds like Steve Polley, and Randy Hicks caught multiple tornadoes? I will get Steve's video uploaded hopefully in a little while. Great job guys, fun chase day!
(6142009-14:53UTC) Chris Rice: Steve and I stayed in Limon, CO last night after chase. This might be the first time I drive in a complete circle around Kansas without going into KS, LOL!!! Tornado in Morgan Co, CO last night only lasted 2 minutes, and we missed it because a new cell near Sidney, NE looked as if it was going tornadic, and chased it, but only produced beautiful structure, and pea size hail. Possible OK panhandle chase 2day!
(6152009-17:31UTC) Chris Rice: Of course I had to head back to KC last night, but tornadic potential looks to be in the vicinity of Great Bend and just W, according to SPC initation is about 3pm from Scott City to Dighton, KS N of WF, then moving E to around E to SE toward Ness City.
(6172009-16:24UTC) Chris Rice: Looks like the group will be heading out W on I-80 looking for initiation, and then it's game on. LIVE streaming to take place this afternoon stay tuned!
(6212009-13:17UTC) Chris Rice: After replacing alternator and battery still having electrcal problems. Fuse holder is bad, but not the issue, inverters keep going into battery saving mode - 4 different inverters on 2 different connections at different times. If Steve and I can get this problem fixed looks as if target today is NE IA by 1pm, playing WF.
(6212009-23:49UTC) Chris Rice: Steve Polley just scored a tornado on dash cam NE of Eldora, IA around 6:45pm.
(6232009-16:19UTC) Chris Rice: Truck is fixed. 2 problems found fuse holder bad causing voltage drops, and a short in reverse light plug below truck causing fuses to blow among other wierd things. Thanks Steve for the help, ready to roll!
(7082009-14:25UTC) Steve Polley: Target Area: Buffalo, SD - Forecast Discussion: 500mb winds 50-60knts, backed 850mb winds at 30 knts just to the north, Surface winds will be backed at 20 knts. Dewpoints are forecasted to be 65-70F in the area. 0-3km Helicity will be over 300m2s2 just west of Buffalo. Supercell development with isolated tornados is likely early on in the MT,WY, SD borders with movement to the ENE at 15knts. Will be watching mesoanalysis throughout the day and adjust accordingly.
